The English Department provides MA students with a program tailored to their academic aspirations. We deliver an enriching educational experience for those seeking the MA as their final degree, while equipping students aiming for doctoral studies with essential skills and knowledge. Graduates holding a BA, HBA, or Concurrent Education degree in English find compelling reasons to advance their literary studies with us. Our MA program presents multiple pathways: a thesis option for deep scholarly exploration, a coursework option for broad exposure across disciplines, and a research-project option blending both approaches.
Additionally, we feature two distinctive Lakehead-exclusive programs. The creative-project option enables students to produce original works while critically examining their chosen genre. Previous projects have spanned fantasy, children's literature, poetry, and creative nonfiction. Our collaborative Gender and Women's Studies program allows students to draw from both departments' expertise, specialize in gender-related studies, and earn a dual-focus degree for advanced study in both fields.
Our department provides a Master's in English and Cultural Studies with flexible completion options. We encourage applications from both Canadian and international students with backgrounds in English literature, cultural studies, or related fields. Except where otherwise stated in the Admission Requirements of a particular program, degree students must have a four year bachelor's degree or its equivalent with at least second class standing (B) based on their last 20 half courses or equivalent.

An applicant holding a degree other than one in the discipline area to which admission is sought will be considered on the basis of courses taken and academic standing. A Qualifying Year at the undergraduate level may be required to meet the admission standards. Courses taken as part of a Qualifying Year can not be used as credit towards a graduate degree.

In addition to the general admission requirements for Master programs, the following requirements also apply:
