The Master of Philosophy in English Language and Literature is a distinctive two-year program—the only one of its kind in Canada—offering specialized academic training, comprehensive course options, a Publishing Practicum, and automatic admission to Queen's English Doctoral Program upon completion. This MPhil program especially appeals to undergraduate students considering future doctoral studies.

Qualification Requirements

  • Honours Bachelor of Arts degree with minimum average of B+ (3.3/4.3 GPA)
  • Cumulative minimum average of A- (3.7/4.3 GPA) in 10 full-year English Literature courses (or equivalent).
  • Applicants are expected to have taken courses in most major fields of English literature from the medieval period to the present, and in literary theory.

Test Requirements

If English is not your native language, you will need a total TOEFL score of at least 627 (paper-based), or 109 (Internet-based) as well as a TOEFL Test of Written English section score of 6.0 (paper-based) or 30 (Internet-based), IELTS: 7 (minimum score, academic module); PTE Academic: 65 (minimum overall score) to be permitted to apply to our graduate program.
