The English Department provides MA students with a program tailored to their academic aspirations. We deliver an enriching educational experience for those seeking the MA as their final degree, while equipping students aiming for doctoral studies with essential skills and knowledge. Graduates holding a BA, HBA, or Concurrent Education degree in English have compelling reasons to advance their literary studies with us. Our MA program features multiple pathways: a thesis option for in-depth research on chosen topics, a coursework option for broader field exposure and faculty interaction, and a research-project option blending both approaches.
Additionally, we provide two distinctive Lakehead-exclusive programs. The creative-project option enables students to produce original works while critically examining their chosen genre. Previous projects have spanned fantasy, children's literature, poetry, and creative nonfiction. Our collaborative Gender and Women's Studies program allows students to leverage expertise from both departments, specialize in gender-related topics, and earn a combined degree for advanced study in both fields.
Our department offers a Master's in English and Cultural Studies with flexible completion options. We encourage applications from both Canadian and international students with backgrounds in English literature, cultural studies, or related fields. View our introductory video below and explore the links for more details. The Social Justice Studies specialization within our MA program facilitates interdisciplinary work at the intersection of social justice and literary-cultural studies.
