The Indigenous Learning department offers interdisciplinary, cross-cultural education accessible to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. Drawing from diverse fields like history, geography, anthropology, and sociology, this program explores social frameworks and Indigenous-mainstream population dynamics in Canada.
Our curriculum seeks to deepen understanding of Indigenous cultures, contemporary experiences, and political concerns. Rather than taking a purely historical perspective, we emphasize present-day realities of Indigenous communities. Historical elements are studied through the lens of ongoing impacts, helping to correct misconceptions about Indigenous Peoples. Students will develop skills including archival research, census data interpretation, cultural competency, government document analysis, critical thinking, and effective written/oral communication.
Our programs draw students from Northwestern Ontario, Southern Ontario, Quebec, the U.S., and internationally from countries like Saudi Arabia and Norway. This geographic diversity enriches classroom discussions through varied perspectives, supporting our commitment to hands-on learning and intercultural understanding.
