The Honours Bachelor of Paralegal (HBPL) program builds upon the foundational skills needed for Ontario paralegal licensure, equipping students with the sophisticated legal analysis required for courtroom and tribunal practice. While lawyers traditionally dominate legal services in Canada, other legal professionals like law clerks, assistants, and paralegals also deliver services under different levels of attorney oversight. Ontario uniquely recognizes paralegals as licensed practitioners authorized to operate independently within defined legal boundaries. HBPL students delve into constitutional law and Charter rights, criminal and summary offense procedures, contract and tort law, tribunal operations, small claims court protocols, negotiation and mediation techniques, along with insurance and employment law. The curriculum combines essential legal frameworks with cultural awareness training, preparing graduates to assist diverse communities such as immigrants, refugees, Indigenous groups, women, and 2SLGBTQIA individuals. Students develop expertise in handling human rights cases, disability claims, immigration hearings, criminal matters involving intergenerational trauma, and applications related to mental health, housing, and financial security to effectively support their future clients.
