The Psychology PhD program emphasizes intensive research, with students typically specializing in one of four key research fields: behavioral neuroscience, clinical and health studies, cognitive science, or human development processes. The program offers two distinct pathways. The Research Pathway prepares graduates for careers in academic research, corporate settings, or higher education. Alternatively, the Research and Clinical Training Pathway combines professional psychological service training with research, opening doors to careers in healthcare institutions, policy-making roles, along with traditional research and academic positions. This clinical pathway holds accreditation from both the Ordre des Psychologues du Quebec and the Canadian Psychological Association. Our department cultivates future research leaders through cutting-edge laboratory facilities.
This program explores the neurophysiological, biological, and social dimensions of behavioral issues and their treatments, along with investigating the causes, characteristics, influencing factors, and therapeutic approaches for various psychological disorders. It also examines psychological mechanisms crucial for health promotion and maintenance.
Ongoing child and adolescent clinical research concentrates on developmental psychopathology, including early indicators of adult mental health issues and symptom development. Adult-focused studies investigate anxiety and depression origins while evaluating therapeutic effectiveness. Health research initiatives examine: stress impacts, coping mechanisms, personality traits, and attitudes affecting health outcomes and pain perception; illness as a transition point in aging; elderly patients' experiences with serious illness; and how risk factors, diseases, cognitive functions, and suggestion influence pain perception.
