The Department of Psychology's History, Quantitative & Theoretical division unites faculty who critically examine Psychology's theoretical and methodological underpinnings. This specialization aligns with one Canadian Psychological Association section (History and Philosophy of Psychology) and five American Psychological Association divisions (General Psychology, Experimental Psychology, Evaluation/Measurement/Statistics, Theoretical/Philosophical Psychology, and History). It addresses Psychology's core disciplinary identity - the shared theoretical and methodological framework that unites diverse specializations like Forensic Psychology, Neuropsychology, and Social Psychology within one department. Without this unifying foundation, these specialized fields might merge into other departments like Criminology, Biology, or Sociology. The History, Quantitative & Theoretical faculty serve as guardians of the Psychology program, delivering essential prerequisite and core courses for all departmental specializations. Beyond foundational training, this area maintains its own distinct research agenda and philosophical orientation. Faculty members teach both fundamental curriculum and specialized courses in their expertise areas, covering data visualization, advanced statistical methods (including structural equation modeling), survey design/evaluation, and specialized topics in psychological history and theory.
