The PhD program in Geography, Urban and Environmental Studies enhances your knowledge of human-environment relationships, exploring the social, cultural, and ecological aspects of evolving communities. This program investigates the intricate connections between people and their surroundings while seeking solutions for creating more sustainable living environments. The curriculum incorporates diverse social science approaches and geographic information systems (GIS) to tackle challenges in natural resource development. Participants acquire hands-on expertise through a mandatory 200-hour professional placement in various sectors including private industry, research institutions, NGOs, or public agencies. Additionally, candidates must deliver academic presentations following completion of an instructional workshop offered by the Centre for Teaching and Learning. Our distinguished faculty members, recognized by the Royal Society of Canada's College of New Scholars and the Canada Research Chairs Program, bring interdisciplinary expertise spanning natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
The normal requirement for admission into the PhD is a Master of Arts or a Master of Science in Geography, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, or a related field of study from a recognized university. Applicants are selected on the basis of a sound academic record, strong letters of recommendation, and a convincing statement of purpose which clearly describes their academic interest in the program and intended area of research. In addition, admission is contingent on the availability of an appropriate faculty member in the Department to serve as supervisor.
