The PhD in Geography is delivered through the collaborative Waterloo-Laurier Graduate Program in Geography. This unique partnership enables students to investigate diverse research topics, spanning critical social and environmental issues to fundamental philosophical and technical inquiries.
Our geography PhD program aims to equip students with comprehensive theoretical and applied geographical knowledge via coursework and seminars. Participants gain teaching experience through assistantships and lectures, while developing research skills and technical proficiency via independent projects and research assistantships. Graduates emerge with the independent capability to teach, conduct research, and produce academic publications.

Alumni of our PhD program have secured faculty appointments (including at University of Toronto – Mississauga, University of Winnipeg, and York University), university administrative roles, postdoctoral fellowships, and research positions with organizations like the American Association of Geographers and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.
