The Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated) (Arts) is a four-year program blending a standard three-year PhD dissertation with one year of coursework, merging broad research preparation with specialized subject matter in a unified qualification.
During the initial year, students complete coursework covering essential research competencies and tailored academic subjects. These skills typically encompass research methods, literature evaluation, critical assessment or lab work, along with specialized topics or a small-scale research undertaking. Students typically select individual subjects from available Master's by research options in Arts and Humanities disciplines, enabling deeper specialization in their chosen area.
International students aspiring to academic careers in their home nations will gain valuable insights into Australian educational approaches through these coursework elements.
The research phase mirrors the conventional three-year PhD structure, culminating in a written dissertation. This thesis must represent a substantial scholarly contribution to its field and cannot exceed 100,000 words. All PhD candidates are assigned two faculty-nominated supervisors.
To advance to the research phase, Integrated PhD candidates must achieve a minimum 65% average in their first year, including 65% in all research skill subjects. Those progressing will have defined their specific research focus before beginning the dissertation component.
