A PhD involves independent research under supervision, evaluated exclusively through an externally assessed thesis that may incorporate creative elements. The doctoral work must represent a significant and novel scholarly contribution, showing both expertise in the chosen subject and advancement within that academic discipline.

As the highest academic achievement, a PhD certifies the holder as an internationally recognized researcher. The program consists of an independent research project developed collaboratively between the student, advisor, department head, and Graduate Research School Board. Candidates may pursue this degree through any academic department within the University.
