The Bachelor of International and Global Studies (Honours) is a rigorous one-year program focused on advanced research. Participants attend specialized seminars and develop a significant thesis on a chosen topic under the guidance of an expert supervisor. While standard degrees offer broad exploration with focused majors, the honours year allows deep engagement with a major subject through original research. This year serves as both preparation for postgraduate work and a crowning achievement of undergraduate studies. For many, honours represents the pinnacle of their academic journey, expanding intellectual horizons while refining research, analytical, and communication skills - all while developing the discipline to complete a substantial independent project. For others, it launches careers in academia or professional research.
The honours curriculum includes an American Studies seminar, another seminar from related disciplines like Film Studies or International Relations, plus an 18,000-20,000 word thesis. This specialized study provides graduates with distinct advantages, offering focused expertise and valuable experience in self-directed research that translates well to professional project work. Achieving first or second-class honours particularly facilitates entry into PhD programs. Past students have explored varied topics including sports culture, digital politics, cinematic relationships, racial identity in fashion, religious influences on diplomacy, and concepts of American uniqueness.
