The University of Melbourne's Spanish and Latin American studies program features language courses for all proficiency levels alongside diverse cultural studies subjects spanning literature, film, popular culture, culinary studies, and gender studies across Spanish-speaking regions. This program enables students to enhance their Spanish language abilities while deepening their understanding of Hispanic cultures through authentic texts, conversations, and multimedia resources. Participants will strengthen intercultural skills by engaging with Spanish-speaking communities both locally and internationally. Students can pursue independent research projects with experts specializing in areas like Hispanic culinary traditions, Iberian and Latin American cinema, regional popular culture, and translation studies. Alongside subject-specific knowledge, the program fosters essential professional skills including analytical thinking, collaboration, effective communication, self-assessment, leadership, research proficiency, workplace ethics, and digital literacy. These competencies are demonstrated through creative assessments like object-based learning exercises, curation projects, iterative writing tasks, and multimedia productions (videos, podcasts, etc.). Selected work samples are compiled in an ePortfolio, serving as a professional showcase of linguistic proficiency, intercultural awareness, and workplace-ready skills gained during the program. The department maintains partnerships with universities in Spain and Latin America, offering exchange and overseas study opportunities as part of the Spanish studies curriculum.
