The Master of Music (Research) is an advanced graduate program that enables students to explore their research capabilities, advance contemporary practice and theory, and refine their expertise in specific musical disciplines.
Earning this degree demonstrates the completion of significant original research conducted under expert academic guidance within an established research setting. The program typically spans 1.5 years for full-time students, with a possible six-month extension. Candidates in most disciplines (excluding Music Psychology, Music Therapy, and Musicology/Ethnomusicology) may present either a composition portfolio or a combined performance portfolio with a written component.
This research-focused degree establishes a strong disciplinary foundation while cultivating essential research skills and contemporary artistic knowledge. Students in performance-based fields receive specialized supervision to achieve artistic excellence.
Graduates emerge well-prepared to pursue doctoral studies in their chosen musical specialization.
In order to be considered for entry, applicants must have completed:
a Bachelor of Music (Honours) degree, or equivalent, with at least an H2A (75%) weighted average.
English language requirements:
IELTS (academic English Only): 6.5 (no band less than 6.0)
TOEFL Internet-based test: 79 + ; Writing 21; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13;
Pearson Test of English Academic: 58 + no communicative skill below 50
Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): 176 + no skill below 169.
