The ANU Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (focusing on the Middle East and Central Asia) stands as Australia's pioneering institution in this field. It specializes in research on Iran, Central Asia, and primarily the Arab world. The Centre combines the examination of modern politics, history, culture, political economy, economics, and Islamic studies in the Middle East and Central Asia within the context of global transformations. It promotes the learning of key regional languages such as Arabic, Persian, and Turkish. Additionally, it addresses matters crucial to Australia's engagement with these regions, including the growth of trade, scientific collaboration, and industrial partnerships.

The Centre's PhD and MPhil programs cater to students deeply interested in specific aspects of these areas, aiming for careers in academia, international organizations, or consulting. Expert guidance is available across diverse subjects, including Middle Eastern and Central Asian politics, history, political economy, Persian, Turkish, Arabic, literature, cultural studies, and Islamic scholarship.
