The ANU Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (covering the Middle East and Central Asia) stands as Australia's pioneering institution in this field. It specializes in research on Iran, Central Asia, and primarily the Arab world. The Centre combines the examination of modern politics, history, culture, political economy, economics, and Islamic studies from these regions within the context of global transformations. It promotes the learning of key regional languages such as Arabic, Persian, and Turkish. Additionally, it addresses matters related to Australia's strategic interests and the growth of its economic, scientific, and industrial connections with the Middle East and Central Asia.
The Centre's PhD and MPhil programs cater to students deeply interested in specialized aspects of these regions, whether pursuing academic careers, roles in international organizations, or positions at consulting firms. Expert guidance is available across diverse subjects, including Middle Eastern and Central Asian politics, history, political economy, Persian, Turkish, Arabic languages, literature, cultural studies, and Islamic scholarship.
Applicants must present at a minimum, an Australian Honours degree or equivalent, with a result of H2A (Second Class Honours Division A), and the approval of an identified supervisor for the research project/thesis. Equivalence may be met by completion of a Master’s degree that includes a significant research component, or by a combination of qualifications and professional experience.
