The Department of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science is home to 30 graduate students, typically welcoming six new candidates annually. The majority pursue doctoral studies, blending coursework with innovative research. This program aims to foster student autonomy and ingenuity while enhancing their scientific and technical expertise. With a favorable student-to-faculty ratio, the department promotes personalized mentorship. Academic and research efforts concentrate on foundational challenges in mechanical engineering and materials science. Qualification Requirements

Admission to our graduate programs is open to students with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree or its equivalent in any field of engineering or in related areas (physics, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and materials science).Applicants whose native language is not English and whose undergraduate studies were done at a university where the language of instruction was other than English must provide the results of their Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A master's degree is not required to apply for a Ph.D. at Yale, although some programs give preference to applicants with post-baccalaureate training.
