The Master of Science (M.S.) in Materials Science and Engineering program equips students to conduct independent research in engineering or applied sciences under faculty supervision. Alongside research credits, this degree mandates 25 course credits beyond undergraduate studies.
The M.S. curriculum includes at least two MSE elective courses in addition to four core MSE classes.
Electives at the 6000 and 7000 levels must be advisor-approved and chosen from SEAS offerings or other UVA science/math courses. A maximum of six independent study credits are permitted.
For transfer credit policies, students should consult the School of Engineering's Academic Rules. Transferred courses may fulfill core requirements if deemed equivalent by faculty, or count as electives with approval from the MSE Graduate Director and Associate Dean. Documentation of syllabus content is required for transferred core courses, while electives must demonstrate 6000-level rigor. Transferred credits cannot have been used toward another degree.
Core and elective course sequencing should be planned with advisors, as foundational knowledge from core classes often supports elective coursework and research.
The program mandates six research credits supervised by faculty, culminating in a written thesis defended publicly.
Core courses, thesis completion, and public defense are mandatory degree components that cannot be waived.
M.S. candidates must submit and defend their thesis at least four weeks before SEAS's published Libra Upload deadline for semester graduation. The defense concludes with faculty evaluation of thesis quality and potential additional requirements.
Thesis committee members must receive the final document at least seven days before the defense date, with faculty reserving the right to request more preparation time when scheduling.
