Materials form the foundation for all engineering and high-tech disciplines that play a vital role in modern society. Graduate studies in this department concentrate on analyzing material structures, structural modifications, and characteristics, along with creating enhanced or novel materials and sophisticated processing techniques. These advancements serve as crucial connections between conceptual designs and practical implementations across manufacturing, nanotechnology, energy, and biomaterials sectors. The Master of Materials Science and Engineering is a coursework-based program tailored for students from diverse technical fields seeking deeper knowledge of material processing, analysis, and behavior. This curriculum is particularly suitable for students pursuing their master's degree through distance learning.
Applicants to the MMSE program typically have a BS degree in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), another field of engineering or a related technical discipline such as chemistry or physics. GRE scores are not required for admission to the MMSE program. If your undergraduate degree is not MSE, the MSE admissions committee may recommend that you begin your graduate work at NC State in the Post-Baccalaureate Studies (PBS) program, as a Non-Degree Studies (NDS) student.
