The Graduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering equips students with comprehensive expertise in cutting-edge materials synthesis, processing, and characterization through both practical experimentation and theoretical frameworks. Research specialties span diverse domains including biomaterials, catalytic systems, ceramic engineering, electronic/electrochemical components, glass science, sustainable engineering solutions, interfacial phenomena, magnetic materials, microstructure analysis, computational modeling, mechanical behavior studies, metallurgy, advanced microscopy techniques, molecular simulations, nanotechnology, photonic materials, polymer science, energy sustainability, consolidation processes, structural engineering, thermal chemistry, and thin-film technologies. Doctoral candidates can pursue focused emphases in biotechnology, biophotonics, or nuclear science to customize their academic trajectory.
The Master of Science (M.S.) program is designed to cultivate professionals for R&D positions or advanced academic pursuits. While sharing the doctoral program's dual emphasis on coursework and investigation, the M.S. features a more concentrated research component and thesis requirement, aligning with its accelerated completion timeline. Most program alumni secure positions within industrial sectors upon earning their master's credentials.
Applicants for admission must meet the UC Davis minimum requirements for admission. Other requirements for admission include:
Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering or closely related field (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics or Chemistry, Applied Science)
A minimum GPA of 3.0 overall on a 4.0 scale. The recommended GPA for admission is at least 3.25.
English proficiency examination (TOEFL or IELTS) for international applicants who have not completed a Bachelor’s at an institution where English was the sole language of instruction. Minimum requirements include a TOEFL score of 100 or an IELTS score of 7.5.
