This dual-degree initiative merges the strengths of Yale's Jackson School of Global Affairs with the School of the Environment. Participants in this combined program develop interdisciplinary expertise in the scientific, policy, and financial dimensions of global resource stewardship and ecological challenges. Every environmental studies curriculum mandates 36 credit hours, along with a summer practicum and either a thesis or culminating project. Furthermore, all dual-degree candidates must complete three weeks of practical skills development prior to commencing their YSE coursework. These intensive August workshops cover plant recognition, ecosystem stewardship, terrain assessment, and urban ecological evaluation. Additional details can be found in YSE's Degree Programs section.

Qualification Requirements

The Jackson Institute for Global Affairs is currently a department within the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Yale (GSAS). However, unlike most of the Ph.D. programs within GSAS, Jackson offers a professional degree for students who are pursuing careers in government, public affairs, and private organizations addressing global issues. As such, our master's degrees are not focused toward an academic career. Regardless of the GSAS application prompts, applicants should tailor their personal statement, and other application components, around their academic and professional background and showcase how these shape their intended focus area at Jackson as well as their future professional plans in the global arena.
Students whose native language is not English and who did not earn their undergraduate degree at a university where English is the language of instruction must also take the TOEFL or IELTS exam. The minimum score required for the TOEFL is 102 on the internet-based exam (iBT) or 610 on the paper-based exam (PBT). A score of 7.5 8 on the IELTS is roughly equivalent to the required minimum
