The NREM graduate program unites experts in natural and social sciences to deliver a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary approach for studying and managing tropical and subtropical ecosystems on land and in water. Special focus is given to island environments and their importance in landscape and seascape management. The program's coursework highlights how physical, biological, and social sciences contribute to conserving and sustainably managing natural, environmental, and economic assets.
Participants develop quantitative analysis, critical evaluation, and specialized competencies to address modern resource utilization challenges, environmental concerns, and contribute to effective policy creation and execution. Graduates emerge as professionals prepared to lead in natural resource management, environmental policy, academic instruction, research, and practical applications across educational, governmental, industrial, consulting, and nonprofit sectors.
Growing global focus on NREM topics has increased funding opportunities, particularly in Asia/Pacific and tropical regions. The program emphasizes partnerships with domestic and international organizations, exposing students to diverse cultural approaches to environmental stewardship.
Reflecting its interdisciplinary and worldwide perspective, the NREM program maintains robust partnerships with various academic units within CTAHR and beyond, including institutions across Hawaii and other locations. Additional expertise is provided through affiliated faculty members.
