The vocal program specializing in early music caters to singers aspiring to build concert careers, with an emphasis on historical repertoire, sacred works, lieder, modern compositions, and small ensemble singing. Participants benefit from weekly one-on-one voice instruction with Professor James Taylor, complemented by rigorous coaching sessions with Tomoko Nakayama and Jeffrey Grossman. The curriculum includes weekly vocal workshops, specialized training in historical performance techniques, language pronunciation, and stagecraft. Performance opportunities include masterclasses led by celebrated global artists and conductors. Voice students at the Institute of Sacred Music join interdisciplinary discussions during weekly colloquia with peers from related programs. These vocalists also comprise Yale's prestigious Schola Cantorum ensemble, performing diverse repertoire from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary commissions under the direction of Professor David Hill and visiting conductor Masaaki Suzuki. The ensemble provides extensive performance exposure through solo features in major works, international tours, and recording initiatives that foster professional development.
