The History of Science and Medicine Program (HSHM) operates as a partially independent graduate track within Yale's History Department. Students in HSHM earn History degrees with a specialization in Science and Medicine history while maintaining full departmental membership. While most participants pursue PhD studies—often alongside MD or JD programs at Yale or other institutions—a one-year Master's option exists. HSHM provides comprehensive exploration of science, medicine, technology history, and related studies through intimate seminar settings, with continuous faculty mentorship. The curriculum emphasizes professional growth in teaching, research, publishing, and presenting, while Yale facilitates supplementary training in areas like exhibition design, digital humanities, and policy studies.

Qualification Requirements

All entering students must have obtained a bachelor's degree or its international equivalent prior to enrolling at the Graduate School. A student may submit an application before receiving the degree, or while their degree is still in progress, so long as the degree will be completed prior to matriculation. In some countries, an undergraduate or bachelor's equivalent degree is completed in three years. In such cases, the completion of a three-year bachelor's equivalent degree is sufficient to meet the application requirement. A master's degree is not required to apply for a Ph.D. at Yale, although some programs give preference to applicants with post-baccalaureate training. Consult your program of interest directly for information on how it evaluates applications.
