For over a hundred years, the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations has granted more doctoral degrees in Assyriology than any other field, focusing on ancient Mesopotamian languages and cultures. The Assyriology program works in close partnership with the Yale Babylonian Collection, which houses America's most extensive assortment of Mesopotamian tablets and artifacts. Students with strong qualifications can hone their expertise in translating, analyzing, and publishing original cuneiform texts through coursework and dissertation projects. With many collection items still awaiting publication, advanced students are encouraged to center their doctoral research on these unique holdings. The collection also features a comprehensive reference library for Assyriology and ancient Near Eastern studies, along with ongoing monograph and text publication series. Regular scholarly visits, academic seminars, and hands-on access to one of the globe's premier Mesopotamian source collections significantly enhance Yale's graduate Assyriology program.
