Students design their academic path with guidance from faculty advisors (forming their advisory committee). A minimum of ten semester courses must be finished within the initial two years. Qualified candidates can request exemptions for courses based on prior graduate-level coursework. Additionally, students may test out of specific ENAS classes through exams administered by instructors, though this won't decrease the total course requirement. Department-specified core courses should typically be completed in the first year, unless stated otherwise. With approval from the graduate studies director (DGS), students may replace these with advanced courses covering equivalent material.
