Welcome to the Materials Science and Engineering Program at Bourns College of Engineering. Many groundbreaking scientific and technological advancements now originate at the materials level, a trend poised to continue in the coming years. Our interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs cultivate engineers skilled in working with diverse materials, specializing in electrical, optical, magnetic, mechanical, and chemical characterization. The program's interdisciplinary approach draws faculty from all engineering departments as well as physics and chemistry, ensuring comprehensive training viewed through an MSE perspective. The undergraduate curriculum builds a strong foundation in physical sciences and engineering before exploring cutting-edge areas like nanotechnology and renewable energy. Graduates leave with versatile technical expertise, preparing them for careers in nanotechnology, electronics, computing, automotive, aerospace, energy, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals, or for advanced studies in engineering and science. Our M.S. and Ph.D. programs provide structured training that enables students from various backgrounds to gain core materials knowledge while offering specialization options for careers in academia, government research, or industry.
