The Department provides a Doctoral Program culminating in a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. Earning a Ph.D. generally requires four to six years. This research-intensive program includes coursework during the initial three terms, with the third term marking the transition to primary research under the guidance of an advisor and supervisory committee. Each Ph.D. candidate works toward completing an original dissertation. Key program milestones include:
Successfully passing a comprehensive area examination conducted by the supervisory committee, assessing the student's grasp of their research field.
Completing a research paper (known as the 690 paper) during the first year of study.
Developing and submitting a dissertation proposal to achieve candidacy status.
Finalizing and defending the doctoral dissertation.
Applicants must have completed your undergraduate degree (bachelor's or equivalent) or will have completed it prior to your intended matriculation date at Yale.
