Robots are growing more prevalent, ranging from industrial assembly-line machines to household cleaning devices. While many robotic functions require minimal intelligence, certain applications demand autonomous operation with adaptable, intelligent decision-making. These include deep-sea research, environmental monitoring in dynamic conditions, extraterrestrial exploration, and select defense-related uses.
Smart autonomous systems
Robots represent a specific type of agent - entities that perceive their surroundings (through sensors), process information to determine actions, and execute behaviors (via effectors). Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) aimed at enhancing agent cognition will consequently produce more sophisticated robotic capabilities.
The Orca Initiative
The Orca Initiative specializes in intelligent system management, particularly for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and other physical agents. Utilizing schema-based reasoning, Orca employs modular knowledge units containing both procedural and situational information to optimize mission performance. This adaptive reasoning system combines strategic planning with real-time adjustment capabilities when circumstances evolve.
