The joint Classics and Renaissance Studies program merges the precision of philological training with a multidisciplinary exploration of late medieval and early modern history and culture (approximately 1300-1700). Participants engage deeply with both aspects of the program, mastering ancient languages to proficiently analyze classical works and their subsequent interpretations, evolutions, and reimaginings. The curriculum fosters collaboration across various disciplines such as Music, Art History, History, English, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, Philosophy, and Comparative Literature. Recent seminar topics have covered: Rome's Urban Landscape, Renaissance Epic Poetry (featuring Homer, Vergil, Ariosto, Tasso, and Milton), Shakespearean Historical Drama, Medieval Poetry, and Urban Life in the Middle Ages. Standard course options include Old Norse and Classical Arabic studies.
