UCLA's Ph.D. program in Hispanic Languages and Literature provides a dynamic blend of academic research, writing instruction, teaching opportunities, and community-engaged humanities. Our department fosters diverse critical perspectives and promotes cross-disciplinary studies that leverage UCLA's academic resources. Students pursuing Latin American-Iberian or Afro-Luso-Brazilian studies can select from numerous literature, cultural studies, film, and theory courses, gaining comprehensive cultural knowledge while focusing on their specific research interests. Those specializing in Spanish and Portuguese Linguistics investigate areas like phonetics, syntax, and historical linguistics while conducting psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic research projects.
Applicants with a bachelor's degree in a field other than Spanish, but who have substantial coursework and/or preparation in the field may also be considered for admission. One or more complementary courses may be recommended if the admissions committee determines that some area of preparation needs to be strengthened.
Applicants holding master's degrees in Spanish or Portuguese linguistics who wish to pursue the Ph.D. with specialization in Spanish, Spanish American or Luso-Brazilian literature must take the master's comprehensive examination in literature. Applicants holding master's degrees in Spanish, Spanish American or Luso-Brazilian literature who wish to pursue the Ph.D. in Spanish or Portuguese linguistics must take the master's comprehensive examination in linguistics.
IELTS Academic overall band score should be at least 7.0 is the minimum required.
TOEFL score on the paper and pencil test must be at least 560 or at least 87 on the internet-based test.
