Yale School of Music horn students receive individualized instruction while also joining weekly studio seminars that explore focused subjects like orchestral passages, technical exercises, or adapted vocal pieces. The program emphasizes mastering diverse musical styles, spanning from Baroque works to modern compositions. Beyond solo performances, horn players engage in chamber music—a cornerstone of Yale's musical training. Students also perform with multiple ensembles, including the New Music New Haven series and the Yale Philharmonia orchestra. These experiences allow them to interpret varied repertoire under the guidance of principal conductor Peter Oundjian and distinguished visiting conductors. Leigh Hall's third-floor horn studio functions as a hub where students practice, collaborate, and study music. The space houses four period instruments—two Classical and two Baroque natural horns—plus a triple horn, all accessible for student use.
