The UC Davis music program offers a focused, personalized education. Your instructors are accomplished scholars and performers, with their compositions and recordings featured worldwide. You'll collaborate with visiting artists who present concerts during their residency. Performance opportunities include the symphony orchestra, band, choir, world music groups, and various chamber ensembles. The curriculum delivers comprehensive training in music theory, history, composition, and performance, with about half your classes dedicated to music studies. This includes two to three years of theory, two years of history, and ensemble participation. Advanced students concentrate on areas like composition, musicology, theory, ethnomusicology, or performance.
The department strongly supports international study opportunities. Working with academic advisors, students design overseas programs that enhance their UC Davis education. Music majors have taken advanced courses at exchange universities in Australia, England, France, Germany, and Italy. Faculty also direct summer programs in Argentina, Austria, and France.
