A Special Divisional Major provides students with a customized option when existing departmental or special majors don't align with their academic goals. With approval from the Committee on Honors and Academic Standing, students can create personalized majors by collaborating with faculty members and following established guidelines. These unique majors vary significantly in focus, often combining multiple disciplines to explore specific cultures, historical periods, or thematic issues (such as French studies, medieval studies, or urban studies). Those interested in Renaissance studies should check the program's dedicated website. Note that a Special Divisional Major cannot be pursued as a secondary major. Prospective students should understand the program's rigorous requirements and potential challenges, including navigating interdisciplinary studies, integrating different academic methodologies, carefully curating course selections, and structuring their curriculum to build foundational knowledge for advanced specialization.
