The Classics Department provides undergraduate programs focusing on Greek or Latin literature, or a combination of both, along with a Classical Civilization major and an Ancient and Modern Greek major in collaboration with Hellenic Studies. These diverse academic paths make Classics an ideal complement to interdisciplinary degree programs. All major plans require approval from the director of undergraduate studies (DUS). Classics majors gain proficiency in ancient languages while exploring significant works and literary styles from Greek and Roman traditions, along with their historical and cultural backgrounds. Through their studies, students develop skills to analyze classical texts through the lens of ancient audiences while tracing their influence across later eras. The department highly encourages Classics majors to take supplementary courses in philosophy, history, and other literature disciplines.
