Concepts, manifestations, and cultural norms surrounding sex, gender, and sexuality have profoundly influenced human existence. This program's core objective is to equip students and practitioners with insights into how these elements interact with other aspects of identity—including race, socioeconomic status, ability, faith, citizenship, generation, and heritage—both within specific cultures and throughout historical contexts. The 12-credit curriculum examines the biological-cultural connections between sex, gender, and sexual identity, critically examining how society assigns meaning to biological factors and incorporates them into various institutional frameworks. Additionally, coursework will assess the psychological and political facets of identity development, study past and present systems of gender-based and sexual prejudice, and consider strategies for driving societal transformation.
