The Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) program at Western Washington University engages in critical examination and practical application through feminist and queer academic work, combining education with activism to explore gender's influence on society and its role in shaping cultural, political, and social structures. We focus on guiding undergraduate students in connecting feminist theories with real-world social justice efforts through analytical thinking. Our curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to studying feminism, gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and queer perspectives within global and diverse cultural frameworks. Through innovative teaching methods and intellectual exploration, we encourage revolutionary thought, cooperative efforts, and activism aimed at dismantling oppression while advocating for freedom and equity. Graduates are prepared for advanced academic pursuits, legal careers, counseling, public service, healthcare, education, artistic endeavors, and social advocacy.
The WGSS degree empowers students to thoughtfully and dynamically interact with their environment. Our curriculum develops students' abilities to comprehend, utilize, examine, and challenge fundamental ideas and theoretical perspectives in feminist, gender, sexuality, queer, race, and ethnic studies. It enables them to critically evaluate and question identities and experiences as products of interconnected systems of power and privilege, while incorporating emancipatory perspectives into academic, social, political, creative, and activist endeavors.
