Western Michigan University's Geological and Environmental Sciences Department offers an accelerated graduate program in Earth Science, enabling undergraduates to earn credits toward a Master of Science (non-thesis, Accelerated) while finishing their bachelor's degree.
Upon admission to this accelerated program during their senior year, students can enroll in up to 12 credit hours of approved 5000-level courses that count toward both degrees. These courses require a minimum grade of B to qualify for graduate credit.
The geosciences bachelor's program requires 122 credit hours, while the accelerated Master's in Earth Science needs 35 credits (including 24 in Geosciences and 18 at 6000-level). By maximizing the 12 graduate credits, students complete just 145 combined credits instead of the standard 157. Typically requiring 2-2.5 years post-bachelor's, this accelerated path can be finished in 12 months with summer courses or 1.5 years after earning the B.S. in Geosciences.
This program is open to undergraduate students who:
Are enrolled as B.S. students in the Geology, Geochemistry, Geophysics or Hydrology majors.
Have senior status (minimum 88 credit hours) and have earned a minimum of 30 credit hours at WMU and at least 20 credit hours as a declared major in the Geological and Environmental Sciences Department.
Have and maintain a cumulative overall GPA of at least 3.0 based on at least 88 earned hours, at least 30 of which shall be earned at Western Michigan University.
Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above in their major classes and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above in their cognate classes.
Minimum English proficiency test scores:
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): 80 iBT
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic: 6.5
Pearson Test of English, Academic Module (PTE): 54
Michigan English Test (MET): 57
