The Master of Arts in History program prepares students for PhD studies while also serving as a professional qualification for various careers in research, education, and public history.
Our History Department provides both Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, with particular expertise in public history, Medieval European studies, and American history. Additionally, students can pursue two Graduate Certificates or enroll in our Accelerated Graduate Degree Program (BA/MA).
Alumni from Western Michigan University's History Department teach at institutions ranging from major research universities to K-12 schools. They work as archivists, museum exhibit designers, documentary filmmakers, and government officials, including roles with the National Park Service. Many apply their historical training in private sector positions. Most importantly, our graduate students contribute original historical scholarship that advances our collective understanding of the past.
Substantial undergraduate course work in history and closely related disciplines is typically required for admission to the Master of Arts program.
