The Master of Arts degree is awarded to students who fulfill the specified criteria within six years of enrolling at Lehigh. This MA can serve as either a final qualification or a pathway to doctoral studies. Applicants seeking to pursue a Ph.D. at Lehigh must submit a separate application for that program by the start of their last MA semester, with the key condition being they secure approval from a faculty advisor to supervise their graduate capstone project. A minimum GPA of 3.3 on Lehigh's 4.0 scale is mandatory for all students. Candidates should present their Master's Degree completion plan promptly after earning 15 credits toward the degree. The MA program necessitates completing 30 credit hours of coursework, which must incorporate: 1) the 401 Research Methods seminar (three credits), and 2) one of the following capstone options, chosen in consultation with faculty advisors: a) a thesis based on primary sources (six credits across two semesters), b) an in-depth research paper utilizing secondary sources (three credits), c) a comprehensive examination covering two fields (three credits), or d) a Composite Graduate Portfolio (three credits, potentially including digital research components like maps or datasets, multimedia presentations, annotated archival materials, course syllabi, lesson plans, etc.). The capstone project must be supervised by a History Department faculty member and evaluated by at least one additional department member besides the advisor, with acceptance required from both.
