The Department of History provides a one-year master's program culminating in a terminal degree. To graduate, students must successfully complete seven term courses, with a minimum of four in History. The program requires significant written submissions for at least two courses and mandates Honors grades in two classes, along with an overall High Pass average. Additionally, all candidates must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language through examination. Historical instruction at Yale dates back to the 1760s when President Thomas Clap initiated dedicated history courses, with the formal Department of History established in 1919 during Yale's departmental reorganization. History emerged as a favored discipline when majors were first introduced post-World War I, reaching peak enrollment in the 1950s. For over fifty years, History has consistently attracted 15-20% of Yale undergraduates, with annual course enrollments ranging from 4000 to 5000 students.
