Western Michigan University's Master of Arts in Counselor Education program equips students for careers in diverse counseling fields, including college counseling, clinical mental health, marriage and family therapy, school counseling, and rehabilitation counseling. Administered by WMU's Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology, the program offers these specializations:
Clinical Mental Health Counseling
This track trains future counselors for clinical settings while providing advanced assessment skills. The curriculum fulfills Michigan's educational requirements for Limited License Professional Counselor (LLPC) certification and holds CACREP accreditation.
Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling
Focusing on systemic approaches to family therapy, this specialization addresses modern relationship challenges. It meets Michigan's LLPC requirements and can be tailored with advisor guidance to qualify for Limited License Marriage and Family Therapist (LLMFT) credentials. The program maintains CACREP accreditation.
School Counseling
Designed for educational environments from pre-K through high school, this option qualifies graduates for Michigan's K-12 school counselor license and LLPC certification. It also carries CACREP accreditation.
Rehabilitation Counseling (currently not accepting applications)
This 53-credit program trains rehabilitation specialists to assist individuals with disabilities, covering vocational rehabilitation, disability services, and rehabilitation technology. The curriculum includes a 600-hour supervised internship and leads to professional counselor licensure and rehabilitation counselor certification. CACREP-accredited, it's also available as a dual-degree option combining rehabilitation counseling with blindness and low vision specialization.
