The Doctoral program in Counseling Psychology was established in 1978 and is now part of the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology. Guided by a scientist-practitioner approach, the program emphasizes the interconnected nature of theory, research, and clinical practice. Coursework and hands-on training aim to develop expertise across these three areas while promoting their seamless integration.

Prospective doctoral students can review admissions statistics, outcome data, and other program information to evaluate their options. Alumni commonly pursue careers in diverse environments such as academic institutions, college counseling centers, mental health clinics, medical facilities, and private practices.

Program administration is overseen by the Counseling Psychology Training Committee. Graduates fulfill the educational prerequisites for psychologist licensure in Michigan. The program's APA accreditation generally ensures that students meet coursework standards for licensure across most states.

Qualification Requirements

Students who enter the program with Masters’ degrees in counseling psychology or counseling often meet all the Master’s level prerequisites for doctoral courses and may have already have had a few of the required doctoral courses. Students, who enter with a Bachelor ’s degree, or a Master ’s degree in a non-counseling related area, will have to take additional Masters’ level coursework and practica. For this reason, there may be higher mean and median amounts of time to complete the program for years in which a higher percentages of our graduates had entered the program with a Bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree in a non-counseling related area.
