Gaining admission to Western Michigan University's music education program requires passing the institution's audition and evaluation process, conducted every November, January, and February. The program offers two specialization tracks: Choral/General focus and Instrumental focus, both culminating in a degree and K-12 teaching certification. During your studies, you'll commit at least five days weekly for one semester to student teaching, engaging with both academic and extracurricular music programs at your assigned school.
Participation in student groups and local organizations like the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Sigma Alpha Iota, National Association for Music Education, Michigan School Band and Orchestra, and Vocal Music Associations provides excellent networking and career growth prospects.
A first-year applicant is a student who is applying for admission and who has not attempted or earned any college credit after graduating from high school/secondary school (or earned equivalent).
