The Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.) program prepares undergraduates for careers teaching music in K-12 schools. Our distinguished faculty and strong focus on teacher development make this possible. Through this program, you'll develop both as a skilled performer - B.M.E. students participate in the same lessons and ensembles as performance majors - and as a thoughtful educator prepared to teach in diverse learning environments. The B.M.E. curriculum is intensive and typically not suitable for students pursuing non-music degrees. However, combining music education (B.M.E.) with music performance (B.M.) is quite feasible, requiring just one extra semester (totaling four-and-a-half years) to complete both degrees concurrently. This dual degree option may appeal to students wanting maximum performance opportunities at the University of Maryland. Dual degree candidates complete eight semesters of classes, private lessons, and ensemble work, followed by a ninth semester devoted entirely to student teaching.
Our string department features nationally renowned soloists, chamber musicians, and orchestral players committed to excellence in teaching violin, viola, cello, bass, and harp. Students learn from both resident faculty and visiting artists from the National Symphony Orchestra. Our string professors are experienced chamber musicians who foster collaboration while offering rigorous training within a major research university setting. Students transfer the refined skills developed in chamber music - including precision, communication, musical insight, and leadership - to their solo and orchestral performances.
