The Art and Design Department provides a comprehensive program tailored for students seeking a liberal arts education in creative fields. Aspiring artists can access diverse avenues to showcase their creativity and secure career opportunities post-graduation. The program allows students to investigate various artistic disciplines and select the specialization that aligns with their passions and abilities.
The Bachelor of Arts curriculum caters to students pursuing: (1) a liberal arts focus with art emphasis, (2) concentrated art studies, (3) graduate school preparation in art, (4) academic and professional career readiness, or (5) art teaching credential requirements.
All Art majors must complete the foundational lower and upper division courses. Students then choose elective units from one or more departmental concentrations to fulfill their B.A. requirements in their selected discipline. The program also provides extracurricular experiences to enhance professional competencies and career prospects.
The department aims to deliver a well-rounded visual arts education through three key disciplines: art education, art history, and visual arts. The curriculum fosters visual literacy, creative problem-solving, and the appreciation of perception, experimentation, innovation, and analytical thinking. Students explore art's historical evolution and cultural significance, along with its social and community impact. Specialization options include animation, ceramics, digital arts, drawing, graphic design, illustration, painting, photography/video, printmaking, and sculpture.
