Western Michigan University's jazz studies program has earned global acclaim for its creative methods in jazz instruction. The program draws both undergraduate and graduate students from across the U.S. and around the globe. Alumni have become prominent figures in jazz and popular music performance, Broadway, studio production, composition, arranging, vocals, and music education.
As a WMU jazz studies student, you can explore recording techniques, train in audio production, or work as a student engineer/producer in the university's studios. You might also participate in one of WMU's performance groups, such as: Gold Company, Gold Company II, University Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Lab Band, WMU Drum Choir, WMU Jazz Octet, Western Jazz Quartet, or faculty-mentored jazz combos. Performance opportunities extend to The Union, an elite jazz club in downtown Kalamazoo where students and faculty present over 80 shows each year through WMU's partnership with this prestigious venue.
