The School Counseling specialization equips students for careers in K-12 educational environments, whether public or private. This curriculum is overseen and accredited by Michigan's Department of Education. Classes within this focus area emphasize a growth-oriented methodology for providing counseling services in multicultural school environments. The Michigan School Counseling Association played a key role in establishing the statewide K-12 developmental guidance program framework in 1993, which remains central to the current curriculum. Graduates of this program (regardless of prior teaching certification) qualify for school counseling positions and can be endorsed for the School Counselor License (SCL). To obtain the SCL, candidates must achieve a passing grade on the MTTC Guidance Counselor exam administered by Michigan's education authorities.
