The Immunology & Microbiology Ph.D. program prepares students for research careers in immunology, microbiology, or virology. In the initial year, students enroll in cellular and molecular biology courses within the interdisciplinary biomedical sciences curriculum, alongside specialized immunology, microbiology, and virology classes. Through journal clubs, seminars, and lab rotations, students engage with faculty and peers. A summer oral preliminary exam follows the first year. Students usually choose their dissertation advisor post-exam, commencing their research journey. By the second year's end, a dissertation committee forms, convening biannually to assess research progress and academic coursework. Most candidates defend their dissertations around their fifth year's conclusion. Additionally, the program mandates submitting a first-author paper to a peer-reviewed journal.
