The Ph.D. program equips aspiring economists with comprehensive training via graduate-level coursework, seminars, tutorial guidance, and research workshops. This curriculum aims to establish a robust understanding of economic principles, quantitative approaches, and specialized disciplines, preparing graduates for roles in academia, research institutions, corporate sectors, and financial organizations.

Specialization options currently include health economics, labor and human resources, and industrial organization. The economics department's Ph.D. represents an academic achievement that demonstrates both advanced economic expertise and the capacity for original thought and independent research development.

Our doctoral program emphasizes rigorous economic analysis methods with practical applications across numerous specialized areas. Typically spanning three years of structured coursework plus one to two years of dissertation work, the program's demanding nature makes full-time employment during studies uncommon. Graduates find opportunities in higher education, private industry, financial services, and public sector organizations.

Qualification Requirements

Admission to the Ph.D. program requires an undergraduate honor point average of at least 3.0 (B). Scores on the verbal, quantitative, and analytical sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) must be submitted to the department as part of the application for admission. Applicants from countries in which English is not the principal language must attain either a score of 550 on the TOEFL examination or a score of 85 on the Michigan Test (MELAB). IELTS 6.5 (overall band), 79 internet-based (iBT and iBT Home Edition). We welcome applications from students who have majored in disciplines other than economics.
